HVR Issues Temporary Extension on SA2015 Helmets

As many of our members are aware, the 2026 racing season was originally scheduled to mark the retirement of SA2015 helmets, with SA2020 or newer certification required for competition. However, the motorsports industry is currently experiencing limited availability of the newly released SA2025 helmets, making it difficult for some drivers to obtain their preferred models.

In response to these supply challenges, the Vintage Motorsports Council (VMC) has announced a temporary extension allowing the continued use of SA2015 helmets. After careful consideration, Heartland Vintage Racing will follow this guidance and implement a similar temporary extension policy for our events.

Temporary Policy Details:

  • Eligibility: Helmets must be Snell SA2015 rated, in excellent condition—no cracks, unusual wear, fading, or damage. All helmets will be subject to a stringent pre-use inspection by HVR tech inspectors.
  • Inspection Protocol:
    • Exterior – No cracks, dents, or abrasions. Fail if any visible damage.
    • Interior –  Intact liner, no compression/odor. Fail if degraded.
    • Straps – Secure, no frays/stretch. Fail if compromised.
    • Certification – Valid 2015 Snell sticker. Fail if missing/faded.

Replacement Requirement

This extension is intended only as a short-term accommodation. Once your preferred SA2025 helmet becomes available, you are expected to upgrade immediately. The replacement may not be deferred to a future season.

This approach is designed to provide flexibility for drivers who are waiting for specific helmet brands, models, or sizes that have not yet reached the market, while maintaining our ongoing commitment to driver safety and compliance with evolving standards.

We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we navigate this transition. If you have questions about helmet certification or availability, please contact us for guidance.
